Carl Sean McMahon bugling elk sculpture with majestic steel form and delicate cedar wood accents

Elk Sculptures

Category Overview

Concept
This category features elk (wapiti) sculptures. Elk are graceful, striking animals with a strong sense of majesty. I have created a range of elk sculptures, including a large outdoor piece made from a 1913 Linotype printing press, now permanently installed outside the Castlegar airport.

Development
The bugling posture of the elk captures the essence of its call to the wild. I have sought to represent this through several of my elk sculptures.

Latest developments

"Wapiti V" is the most recent addition to the elk series. Scroll down for additional information and images. New sculptures are currently in development.

"The Rebirth Project"

The goal of this project was to repurpose components from an archaic, historically significant Linotype printing press and transform them into a contemporary metal sculpture that embodies the spirit of Castlegar.

The Linotype consisted of various materials, including cast iron, steel, and brass. Each component was carefully examined and categorized based on its anatomical resemblance to parts of a regional animal. The wapiti was selected as the subject because it is indigenou

The Linotype printing press:

This Linotype, built in June 1913 was retired from service at the Castlegar News in 1973. It was presented to the Castlegar museum on August 7, 1977 by the founding publisher of the Castlegar News, L.V (Les) Campbell, at the time on the newspaper’s 30th anniversary.

The Linotype is a hot-metal line casting machine used to set ads and news stories. An operator struck keys which caused matrixes to call into lines of words. Hot lead was then cast against the matrixes in a mold and when it cooled you had a slug of type. The type was then put into a chase forming a page. The pages were then put on a press, inked, and the type’s image transferred to paper.

This Linotype was kindly donated to me from The Castlegar News. I would also like to thank Pat and Val Field for their involvement in the donation and the shipping of the unit to my studio on Salt Spring Island.
