Metal Figures

“Full Figure” is composed of materials procured from discarded objects: random items in dumpsters (old chairs, dart boards, barbecue grills), old swing sets, and broken machinery bits. After collected, the materials were cut down, cleaned and prepared for welding. One interesting component of my creation process was the influence that the different characteristics of each object had on the piece as a whole. When creating the sculpture, each piece’s position or usage was not preconceived; instead it was created and guided by the material’s properties. Certain attributes, such as a sharp angle of a chair arm or the curve of a tube, helped dictate how the piece flowed. I find that each piece in the sculpture possesses some kind of human-like characteristic as a constant reminder to viewers that it was humankind that created the garbage in the first place.
